4.0 out of five stars Good MAC MINI!, July 23, 2011
By KSBAY See all my reviews This review is from: Apple Mac Mini MC815LL/A Desktop (NEWEST VERSION) (Personal Computers) The Mac Mini was updated on July 20th 2011. It not will include an optical drive. The price also has been reduced by $100. There are many big upgrades and minor changes between the 2011 base Mac Mini and 2010 model which I have in depth below.

Major Upgrades

2.3 GHz Intel Core i5 dual core processor a big upgrade over 2010′s model which used the antiquated Intel Core two Duo processor.

Intel HD Graphics 3000 integrated graphics processor An upgrade but not really as benchmarks demonstrate that the I.G 3000 is worse or at best equal to the Nvidia 320m integrated graphics processor in last years model.

Thunderbolt port a super fast data move port. Data move speeds (in daily use) are supposed to be as fast as USB 3.0 and firewire if not more. As of now, no buyer level thunderbolt matched merchandise are available but should be available soon. The TB port also functions as a Minidisplay port. For connecting your Mac Mini to an external monitor, you will need a Syba High Quality Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter If you want to connect it to a tv, you will need a Kanex iAdapt MDPHDMIV2 HDMI V2 Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter with Audio Support

Bluetooth 4.0 technology the new variant of Bluetooth. Useful for transferring data off your mobile phone and connecting other Bluetooth peripherals (keyboards, magic trackpad etc) to your Mac Mini.

500 gb (5400 rpm) hard drive last years model had a 320 gb hard drive. A minor upgrade.

NOTE the Mac Mini not has an optical drive (Superdrive)

STANDARD FEATURES from last years model (minor changes noted in brackets) are

Unibody enclosure
2gb of 1333 MHz DDR3 Ram 1gb ram sticks x two (It supports up to eight GB. In the 2010 model it was 2gb of 1066 Mhz DDR3 Ram.)

HDMI audio/video output with support for up to 1920 x 1200 pixel resolution and multichannel audio output (HDMI to DVI output adapter included if obliged to connect to a DVI only monitor)

Four USB 2.0 ports
One FireWire port
Combined optical digital output/headphone output

Secure Digital memory card slot matched with SD, SDHC, and SDXC media
Gigabit Ethernet wired networking (10/100/1000BASE T)
Wi Fi 802.11n specification; 802.11a/b/g compatible

Software included is OS X 10.7 Lion and a one year warranty on parts and 90 day telephone technical support is standard.

The new Intel i5 processor in the base Mac Mini is a speed demon, allowing the Mac Mini to obliterate 2010′s model in performance benchmarks also as real world handling. The Mac Mini is excellent when it comes to watching full HD videos, working on papers, listening to music, streaming movies / music, surfing the web and other regular computing tasks.

Something to be aware of though, there is no optical drive in this year’s Mac Mini. If you need one, you will have to buy an external DVD drive and connect it to the Mini through one of it is USB 2.0 ports. Apple expects you to download all software from the internet ( digital downloads,Itunes Store, etc etc). Taking away choice from the customer is never a good thing in my humble opinion.

Apple is still as well as two gb of ram in this machine which is shameful for a product being sold in 2011 but I am sure they have their reasons (Upsell to the mid level Mac Mini or the Mac Mini Server. Higher profit margins. Etc etc) but this leads to a degraded user experience out of the box. I’d recommend adding 4gb (2 x two sticks) Corsair eight GB DDR3 Laptop Memory Kit CMSO8GX3M2A1333C9 of ram if you want to multitask smoothly. It is easy to replace the ram, just turn the bottom cover, open it up, pull out the old ram sticks and add the new sticks. (I propose reading through the manual once before you do so though) Apple also has bumped up the hard drive capacity from 320 to 500gb but it is still a 5400rpm hard drive. Another useful way for causing a degraded user experience as programs take longer to launch.

Thunderbolt is a good addition to the machine but as of now, no buyer level (affordable) Thunderbolt merchandise exist. The merchandise that do exist like the Apple Thunderbolt Display and the Promise Pegasus NAS Hard Drive Array, both cost $1000. The Thunderbolt cable itself costs $50.

Last year, when I wrote my review of the 2010 Mac Mini. I said that the Mac Mini was a awful value for the price considering it contained an antiquated C2D processor(and rightly so). But the changes in this year’s model make the Mac Mini a respectable buy now in time. With a $100 price drop and the new machine being twice as powerful as the old one caused by the Intel i5 processor, the basic model 2011 Mac Mini is suggested if you are looking for a able, non obtrusive, power saving machine that will handle your daily computing tasks.

Notes of Interest The power supply of the Mac Mini is still interior. This may look cleaner from a design standpoint but it may also be considered a design flaw. If the power supply ever malfunctions, instead of a power brick, you will have to take your complete Mac mini in to an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider and leave it there for repairs which may lead to more downtime.

No optical Drive From now on, it is just BYOMKM and D (Bring your Mouse, Keyboard, Monitor and Disc burner) If you have to purchase an optical drive, that will be $50 $80 extra. Though you may be able to wireless borrow another computers optical drive through the DVD/CD sharing feature. Certain reviewers are stating that Apple was able to drop the optical drive which is why they reduced the price by $100. That is not true. Think about that that the Mini has generally had an optical drive before this model. The Mac Mini when launched, 1st cost $499, then went up to $599 and $699. At all those earlier price points, an optical drive has been included in the machine. Now the machine costs $599 but does not include an optical drive. If you read a review telling you that Apple could decrease the price by $100 only because they removed the optical drive, that is not true. Apple removed the optical drive for their own reasons ( To push users towards digital downloads from their App store, etc etc)

Also, the standard Mac Mini now has space for a second hard drive caused by the elimination of the optical drive. If you wanted, you could add a second hard drive. It is a complicated procedure (Why? Cus Apple wants it that way) and it may void the warranty IF you break something while doing so but it is possible. You will also need a special SATA cable. For in depth information on how to, check iFixit.Com

Value Equation though the Mac Mini is the cheapest mac desktop, it can get costly fast. Cost is an vital part to think about before you jump into Apple Land. If you choose to upgrade the ram ($60) and also have to buy a LCD monitor ($100 to 300) keyboard and mouse ($30 to 60) and optical drive ($50 $80) and AppleCare Protection Plan for Mac Mini (NEWEST VERSION) ($144) once you total it all up, the Mac mini will end up costing nearly as much as a Macbook Air (low end model which is more portable) or the entry level iMac (21.5 inch screen, 4gb of ram, dedicated graphics). If that is the case, you better off examining those machines as buy alternatives instead of purchasing a Mini or buying a Home.Theater.PC by any reputed PC maker.

Hope this helps!

5.0 out of five stars unbelievable performance., July 22, 2011
By Brian Stucki (Las Vegas, NV) See all my reviews
(REAL NAME) This review is from: Apple Mac Mini MC815LL/A Desktop (NEWEST VERSION) (Personal Computers) we have installed a good number of machines at Macminicolo, here is what we learned

A fast list:

The base mac mini now starts at $599. This is a $100 decrease from the last base mac mini.

The Mac mini has kept the same basic form. You may be able to still turn the bottom cover to upgrade RAM easily.

Apple eliminated the optical drive across the board with this release.

There are a good number of build to order alternatives. You may be able to use SSD, upgrade any machine to 8GB of RAM, upgrade both interior drives for a total of 1.5TB. Only offers the three stock machines.(But you may be able to upgrade the RAM easily on your.)

The Mac mini has left the Core two Duo family and now uses Intel i5 and i7 processors. A important upgrade. In many cases doubling the performance.

The RAM changed from PC8500 DDR3 1066MHz to PC10600 DDR3 1333MHz.The Apple avilable bound is 8GB, but we are hoping to test 16GB soon.

The Mac mini gains Thunderbolt. This will be a big deal sooner or later as more ThunderBolt Accessories are released.

The mini machine still uses a ridiculously small total of power and is almost silent in operation.

4.0 out of five stars Good upgrade UPDATE, July 22, 2011
By Hasodi See all my reviews () This review is from: Apple Mac Mini MC815LL/A Desktop (NEWEST VERSION) (Personal Computers) This is a great upgrade to the last model. I bought the 2GB basic model with a side of Corsair 8GB ram kit. I’m liking Mac OS X v10.7 Lion but I could like to attempt installing Windows seven on here with an external dvd drive (Bootcamp). The sandy bridge chipset works wonders for video encoding. The exclusion of an optical drive wasn’t a big issue for me as I like to use flash media anyways.

Wish it had USB 3.0 but we can not have it all. At least it has bluetooth 4.0 and gigabit ethernet.

UPDATE

I was able to install Windows seven final 64bit onto this mini with no need for an optical drive. I used a flash drive and an offical Microsoft Windows seven iso file.
Using BOOTCAMP you may be able to switch from either OS.

Windows Experience Index
6.9 Processor
7.4 Memory (Corsair 8GB ram kit)
6.3 Graphics
6.3 Gaming Graphics
5.9 main Hard Disk

I can play youtube 1080 good with flash player installed and Netflix works good with silverlight installed. I’m not sure how much this will matter, but with the stock 2GB of ram I think the Intel HD shared 288 MB of ram with the system. After I installed the 8GB my Intel HD shared 512MB of ram with the system. This machine wasn’t made for gaming but i checked out WoW and I got 30 fps on medium settings.

5.0 out of five stars WOW!!!, May 13, 2011
By Daryl Y “don’t google me” (Bay Area, CA) See all my reviews This review is from: Apple iMac MC309LL/A 21.5 Inch Desktop (NEWEST VERSION) (Personal Computers) I have been considering an Apple computer for a while now, and have been unwilling to purchase due to high price tag, in comparison to PCs with alike technical specifications. As an example, a Dell Inspiron All in One with 4GB SDD3 RAM, 500GB hard drive, 2.8Ghz processor, comparable graphics card and bigger, lighter 23″ screen retails for 599. For 1199, you may be able to get the same Dell model with a touch screen, 1TB hard drive, 8GB RAM, 1GB video card, and a bunch of other stuff, running Windows 7. That is twice as much computer, right?

Maybe not. I went into a Best purchase store to play with a Mac, and spent nearly two hours comparing this computer to the ones I just mentioned. I ended up purchasing the Mac, and am completely convinced that it’s well worth the price tag. 1st of all, with less RAM, the Mac was faster and performed much better than a tech specification superior PC. It ran some number of memory draining and intensive applications, like video editing software, iTunes, and web browsers playing video at the same time without any obvious lag. The programs all started up nearly instantly, and everything just seemed to work. The PC that had eight gigs of RAM couldn’t perform all of those tasks now without slowing down. Second, the Mac does not require a seperate anti virus software buy. It is supposed to be virtually unhackable, and you will not have like a dozen McAfee processes running in the background to slow your computer down. That peace of mind for internet security alone is worth the extra money to me.

One of my other reservations for purchasing a Mac haved to use a different operating system, and after years of running Windows, I did not want to have to learn how to use a computer again. But, after playing with the Mac for just some minutes, I realized that it was intuitive, and as easy to use as a PC. As an example, when you want to print a document on a PC, you click the tab on the upper right hand corner, find “print” and click same thing as on the Mac. All of the menus are pretty much same for the word processors and internet browsers, and unless you are planning on writing or editing the DOS, there is not much you will have to adapt to.

Finally, the software that comes with this thing is AWESOME. The photo/video software is surprisingly useful, and I can not imagine anything out there that you may purchase that’s as good as this stock software. There’s music editing, and a bunch of other stuff that’s just as good as the photo software, and while I have not had the chance to really attempt everything out still, I do not think I’ll be disappointed with any of it. To top it off, everyone raves about the buyer support you get when you get an apple product. I hope I will never have to use it, but it assists to know that Apple stands behind their merchandise. Bottom line is, I am really happy with my buy.

5.0 out of five stars Apple iMac MC309LL/A 21.5 Inch Desktop, May 25, 2011
By Platon Murenin “Platon!” (Las Cruces, NM) See all my reviews
(REAL NAME) This review is from: Apple iMac MC309LL/A 21.5 Inch Desktop (NEWEST VERSION) (Personal Computers) I 1st bought an iMac in 2006. It was the same 1st model out of four. Not only it lasted me till now, but since I bought this one not many days ago, I gave my old one to my wife’s sister. I am sure it’ll keep going and going for many years.

Right now, it’s better than ever to purchase a new iMac. I remember when I bought mine, the whole line up was good. But then they gave lower priced iMacs much worse specifications than higher priced ones, particularly by video cards. If you wanted something good all around, you had to use up more money and purchase 3rd or 4th one in iMac’s line up. Not anymore. Every single one has the same RAM, all of them have descrete video cards, and Quad Core processors. Not only that, but they’re the newest i5 Quad Core processors, Intel Sandybridge. If you look at different tests done by different websites, they’ll tell you that there isn’t that big of a difference between iMac line up These days. It will be about 10 or so in speed increase between this iMac and top of the line one. As well, this iMac is faster than top of the line iMac from last generation, so yeah, it is that good!

Like everyone are saying, do not look at the numbers. That is the game PC plays, and people believe them. Read comparison reviews between iMacs and PCs and you will see that in most tests iMacs go head to head with PCs that have twice the RAM and twice the video card and higher clocked processors. In many tests, iMac still come ahead.

Besides nice specifications, iMac has a really good screen. Yes, it’s 21.5 inch, but is is beautiful. People may say that you may purchase all in one from Dell with 23 inch screen. Again, they are numbers, and as well, Dell’s specifications are a joke. IMac has a high quality screen, very correct colors, which is perfect for anything, particularly photography and editing, exactly color correction. And just to show you where those two businesses stand, Apple went for higher resolution on their 21.5 inch display, because they are about quality. Dell on the other hand, chose to have the same resolution on a 23 inch display, because for them it is more vital to say that their display is bigger, rather than talk about quality. Same with HP, just newly they chose USB 3.0 over Thunderbolt. It just shows how low quality they’re to decide already outdated technology for their machines. Yeah, we all may have to wait for a month or two for Thunderbolt accessories to become available, but it is a just price to pay for the fastest of the fast.

IMac itself is a part of art. There aren’t rough edges from all the cheap plastic, it is just two pieces, aluminum enclosure and a part of glass on the front. All ports are nice and neat and it does come with a wireless keyboard and a wireless mouse. Both are comfy.

As common it comes with iLife, so it’s prepared for photos with iPhoto, movies with iMovie, creating music with GarageBand, creating DVDs with iDVD and creating websites with iWeb. As well, sometime throughout this Summer, new Operating System is coming out, but it’ll be a cheap upgrade for those who want it, it is not like purchasing Windows and picking between ten different alternatives, all at the premium price. With Mac, you get just one OS, which has everything. As well, for all of you out there who like to edit, last Cut Pro X is coming out this Summer also, in June, unless if they will move it to a afterward date. It’ll go down in price from $999 to just $299. It will be an excellent editing machine.

I have Windows seven final 64 bit, via BootCamp, to play games. In Windows everything is observably slower. Not only that, but as common, Mac came with everything out of the box, I can zip/unzip files, view PDFs and so on. Windows does not have any of that. I could have to download all of those programs to be able to completely use my computer. Game wise, I think it is pretty good. I play Mafia II on all high settings and it runs just good. Let me remind you that though Mafia II isn’t the new game ever, but it does recommend Intel Quad Core 2.5Ghz, 3GB or more for RAM, and most importantly, 1GB for a video card. Like I said I have all setting on high with 1920×1080 resolution. The only setting that makes it somewhat slow is when I turn on anti aliasing. On one of the levels it was a little slow, so I put Shadow Quality on medium and it was good. After completing the level I turned it on high again.

ALSO, for all of you GAMERS out there, I found a pretty cool web site that shows how well different video cards can handle games. It is not essentially Mac related, just video cards overall. Does not let you to post links to websites, I just put it in the 1st comment. Just to get you an idea, the site says that Crysis two plays good on High settings, Call of Duty: Black Ops plays good on super settings, Metro 2033 plays good on Medium settings. You may be able to check out the rest

Overall, this is the best all in one you may be able to find and one of the best Desktops a money can purchase.

If you do not like Apple or still think it’s overpriced, do that. Find a Desktop/All in one with Sandybridge Quad Core processor and around 6GB to 8GB of RAM and 512MB to 1GB video card. Add a nice screen to it, full HD, no less than 1920×1080. Add wireless keyboard and a wireless mouse. Do not forget bluetooth and Wi fi connectivity. Be sure it has Windows seven Professional for all of the features, or maybe final. As well, be sure all five of iLife equivallent programs are present. And see the price for yourself. I’m not going to bring up the easy set up and that iMac is only one part of aluminum and one part of glass. Because no PC will match it. You must settle for million pieces of plastic holding your computer together.

5.0 out of five stars 1st Mac, and I’m in LOVE!, May 20, 2011
By Amber T See all my reviews () This review is from: Apple iMac MC309LL/A 21.5 Inch Desktop (NEWEST VERSION) (Personal Computers) I have been using Macs for about five years now between school and work. My main machine has generally been a PC. Being a graphic designer, Macs are pretty much the business standard. That’s one of many reasons I bought this iMac.

I must I love this computer. It took me less than 15 minutes from opening the box, unpacking the computer, plugging it in, starting it, and set up. And ten minutes of that taked it out of the box, taking the protecting wraps off of things, etc.

The initial setup was a breeze. It automatically recognized the keyboard and mouse (both Bluetooth), easily connected to my network (after I typed in the password), and bam, we were up and running. Since I never had a Mac before, I did not have a backup that could put all my files on the computer, but I keep all of my files on an external hard drive anyways.

There have been some bumps in to get used to doing certain things on the Mac in comparison to the PC. But, Apple Care is useful and helped me through alot of issues. The major thing was to get Time Machine working like I want. Still do not have it backing up my external hard drive, but that’s because it’s a MS DOS format, which is a format it does not recognize. Other than that, Time Machine is doing backups on own drive. As well, for PC users, Time Machine isn’t System Restore. It’s a file recuperation program only. If you delete a file, you may be able to open Time Machine, find the file, and restore it.

Once you take the time to learn how certain things work in comparison to PC’s, you’ll figure out that there are alot of things that are just much easier on the Mac. Granted, I plan to use both Mac and PC for a while, but so far, I have not had to turn on my PC in some number of days (and I have only had the iMac for about ten days).

Overall, it’s a great machine. Feels like it’s built hard, runs fast, starts up fast, looks great in my room, the keyboard and mouse (Bluetooth) never skips a beat, the Magic Mouse wasn’t hard at all to start using, and in general it’s great. Most likely will generally stick to Mac now. :D

5.0 out of five stars Happy So Far!, January 27, 2011
By waterbowl See all my reviews () This review is from: HP Pavilion p6720f PC (Black) (Personal Computers) Ordered this from Amazon, and I have to I am really liking this computer!

I had it for about a month, using it every day. I left it on at times and I did some number of tests to be sure everything worked. I will break it down with my experience, maybe it will help many people out.

Processor: Phenom x4 840T
This is a newer AMD processor, an OEM only processor. So far it handled everything I have thrown at it. I can run many things a once without a slowdown. It is not silent, I generally hear the faint fan sound, but it is not deafening. I love this processor! I get a 7.3 in the Windows Experience Index.

Hard Drive: Hitachi HDS721010CLA332
1 Terabytes is more than enough for me. Lots of space! I read reviews online about this hard drive, and they have been on the positive side. I’m happy HP used a good hard drive. The sound is on the lower end, not a deafening hard drive at all. It gives me a 5.9 in the Windows Experience Index.

Optical Drive: Samsung TS H65SR
I couldn’t find any reviews about this DVD drive. It’s a basic drive on the cheap end. It isn’t noisy at all, except for when installing programs or running at top speed, which is normal. I experienced bad DVD drives before from Dell that sounded like a helicopter when they were in use, and that’s no exaggeration! So I’m happy to recieve a “normal” DVD drive. Programs install faster than on my older XP computer, I have not done too much burning still, but speed times are equally good.

Memory: six gigabytes
I was not able to see the maker of the memory. Six gigabytes is more than enough for me. It gives me a 7.4 in the Windows Experience Index.

Wireless Lan Card: Ralink
I will not be using the wireless at all for the moment. I did test the Ralink lan card out, and it worked like it should. An antenna is included. I can not speak for using it for long periods of time.

Power Supply: 250 Watts
This is a cheap low wattage power supply. If you want to add more drives or a video card, you will want to get a new power supply. It makes a low buzzing sound when it is fan is running on low, but you may be able to only hear it if you’re close to the computer. At full speed the fan sounds normal.

Integrated Video: Radeon 4200
Not good. While it is good for basic handling, you will need a new video card if you want to do anything involving high in depth graphics. This thing barely runs graphics from five years ago. Graphics and Gaming were low in the Windows Experience Index, I only got a 4.3 and 5.4 on it.

Keyboard and Mouse: HP
Both are wired and are the basic cheap kind. The keyboard is the new flat style, with the keys being more flat than sticking out like on the old keyboards. The optical mouse is a regular two button with a wheel. I favor the old keyboards, but these both are just good for basic use. I do like the look of the mouse, looks stylish!

Software included:
People typically call extra programs installed with new computers “bloatware”, it typically involves programs majority of people do not want. This does have many programs already installed, but it isn’t much at all. Only some e readers, 60 days free of Norton, Cyberlink to assist you burn disc’s, and some extra games from Wildtagent.

If any of the programs aren’t wanted, they may be uninstalled inside some minutes, then may be forgotten about. They’re but good for a new computer user.

I have to talk about the software HP included. I have been using Windows since Windows 95, and I have never, not once, ever used the “Help and Support” that is been included with Windows. But, looking at this one, it’s really great how they have it. They have a link that goes straight to the product page on their website with lots of useful details, I can run many diagnostic tests on the computer, and it has other useful tools and info. I really like the programs HP included, I find them useful.

Note!
You can only create one set of recuperation discs. Be sure to do it soon after you 1st turn on your computer. Once you create them, store them in a safe place. You may be able to generally order them from HP too if it is ever needed. I’d rather get a set of discs with the computer like they use to come with, but to be honest, I really do not mind creating a set like this.

UPGRADES!
I bought a power supply and video card seperately to go with this computer. I got this power supply OCZ OCZ500MXSP ModXStream Pro 500 Watt Power Supply and this video card Sapphire Radeon HD5770 Vapor X one GB DDR5 2DVI/HDMI/DisplayPort PCI Express Video Card 100283VX 2L.
Installing them both was easy. HP is great when it comes to having user friendliness in adding more parts to the computer, I just discovered this and I love it. They have many guides and pictures on their website showing how to add new hardware, in the case it has little diagrams to show you how to take off something. If I compare removing a power supply from this HP, and from a new Dell, HP wins big! I love how the case is intended too, much nicer than the typcial computer cases you’d find today.

After adding the new video card, my Windows Experience Index in the graphics section jumped up from 4.3 and 5.4, to 7.4. A big jump! A video card was definitly needed for me.

With my new power supply and video card added to the computer, I’m happy with this buy. If it lasts a long time without breaking down(oh I do hope it does not, do not break), then this will be ones of the best computer purchases I have made in quite many time.

5.0 out of five stars best computer I have ever bought, February 12, 2011
By silverdragon See all my reviews This review is from: HP Pavilion p6720f PC (Black) (Personal Computers) I found this computer for $529 at staples. Now having used it I could have paid a great deal more. It took all of three min to set up and maybe ten to configure. It’s the most quite computer I have ever owned. And is considerably faster than any I have ever used. The tower is big in comparison to what I owned before, but with 1TB of hard drive and 6GB ram it is not a surprise. My old emachines monitor was matched and I am sure that majority will be so it is not a big deal it did not come with one. The keyboard is great, the buttons are low profile and quite. The mouse is plain. I meant on to get a wireless one anyway. The AMD processor is amazing to say the least. Finaly a computer that will not be outdated next year. It’s well worth the money.

4.0 out of five stars Pretty happy with this box on Creative Suite, April 28, 2011
By Peter Hughes (USA) See all my reviews
(REAL NAME) This review is from: HP Pavilion p6720f PC (Black) (Personal Computers) I wanted an cheap computer to run Adobe CS5 with lots of RAM and hard drive space, without a whole lot else. I have been real happy with this computer. I do not game so the onboard graphics have been good. I’m trying to stick with a single monitor, I bought an awesomely cheap and good 24″ LED Viewsonic VX2450wm, so have not tried to split the dual digital DVI port still. The buttons on the mouse were pretty inflexible (good way to get RSI), so I used a Microsoft Mouse instead. Speakers weren’t included which was good with me, everyone has an old set of OEM speakers running around, why pay for another. I got a pair of inexpensive Genius SP HF500A speakers to play background music and they seem real good.

The bloatware on this box seemed many more intrusive than what I found on a bottom of the line (but still great) Compaq bought for my wife last year. For example, the IE8 browser had TWO count ‘em TWO separate search bars to get rid of. Then I went ahead and installed IE9 nevertheless which looks really clean and nice. I use IE9 to go to recognized or ‘technical’ sites (believe it or not, many applications still target IE only), and Foxfire four (which is great) with NoScript plugin for not known or everyday sites like when searching for something.

The ‘HP Total Care’ help package looks like it may really be useful, someday nevertheless though I do not understand the insane/idiotic Tim Burton style. What is wrong with a tool being simple, clean and not instantly dated? Nevertheless it also took awhile to pick through the bloatware and remove crappy parasites put there to drag my dollar away. The Compaq was much cleaner.

Two minor points on the case, compared with the Compaq (note same company). The on off button is on the top instead of the side, so you may be able to firmly push it in confidence without rocking the case. (I think that throws a strain on the HD, which if you think about it’s a powerful little gyroscope.) there’s a button to the side for stroking the DVD, a big plus over the other where the door covered up the button when it opened. This is supposed to have wireless but for security reasons I stay on a wired network. That’s the a characteristic I paid for and do not use. The machine is calm and the lamps are unobtrusive (no smart blue LED flashing away all night that I have to tape over to get many sleep).

This computer opens one specific big, heavily encoded (JPEG2000) graphics file in 30 seconds. That sounds like many, but my last computer took five minutes for the same file, and my box at work (top of the line some number of years ago, but saddled with many of corporate slowware) takes 20 minutes. Windows seven strikes me as being pretty slick. Many things seem to pop pretty good without the little waits and stumbles that I’m used to with XP. 98 was good in its time, XP was hard, this OS is just cleaner. I hated the tacky XP style and switched everything to Classic Mode, but I’m letting this one ride just like it’s. It’ll take me awhile to appreciate what Windows seven does but already it seems like a winner.

Here is a hint: hard drive toaster. I have a Thermaltake BlacX. It was a cinch to pop old HDs into the toaster and copy from the old computer to the new one. Many better than cracking the computer case and temporarily installing old drives. A good way to keep a backup HD in a separate place, especially when nobody else on your network is interested in making room for 500GB of your graphics files. If you do video this thing is heaven, store your whole project on a 1TB HD, set it in your bookcase, and move on to the next job with a clean slate.

Anyway, good luck with whatever you end up with, there’s many of good stuff out there These days for not so much money. My four star ranking is on account of the bloatware I had to use up time to get rid of. I also could liked more USB ports, particularly since the mouse and keyboard eat up two of them.
